Dr. Brown added “We are going to go even further, as society evolves with greater technological advancements, we are also changing. We are also on a reset.” He also urged students to “be curious” and use the opportunity to check out the innovative work being done in different departments across the university, underscoring the collaborative spirit that defines UTech’s academic community.
Campus Comes Alive
The Papine campus of UTech Jamaica came alive as it celebrated the institution’s rich history, achievements, and student community. Knights Day commenced with a parade led by the Island Drummerz troupe, followed by students from various dorms and faculties proudly showcasing their UTech spirit. The procession started at the auditorium and made its way to the Sculpture Park, creating an electric atmosphere of pride and excitement.
In keeping with the UTech Students’ Union slogan for this academic year, “Refocus, Restructure, Reenergize”, many in the audience expressed enthusiasm for the day, noting the sense of belonging and excitement that the event fostered. Rick Darby, President of the UTech Students’ Union expressed optimism about the university’s future and highlighting the importance of fostering school pride. “Events like these bring our campus together and strengthen the bond between students and their institution,” Darby said.
Throughout the day, the campus buzzed with activities. The UTech Centre for the Arts delivered engaging performances, while giveaways and faculty exhibitions added to the festivities. The atmosphere was one of unity and celebration, with students and staff alike beaming with pride. Second year student Breanna Tingling, made it clear how impactful the day was for many. “This is my second Knights Day, and I can’t wait for next year’s staging. It really makes me proud to be a UTech Knight.” Ky Morris, a first year Computer Science student stated, “I think this is a good initiative. It helps to acquaint you with the school a lot more and really build school spirit, even though I’ve never really been one for that kind of thing.” In closing, President Brown took time to thank corporate sponsors for their support in making the event a reality, pointing out that “they know you are the future workforce who will make their organizations great.”
As UTech looks forward to future stagings of President’s Knights Day, the event is set to continue being a hallmark of university life. This year’s celebration was not just bigger and better than the previous year but a testament to the growth of UTech’s school spirit.
