Chanting “Break di Vaz!”, Buchanan’s campaign seeks to build momentum for a fresh chapter in Eastern Portland’s political representation. On Sunday, November 10, 2024, Port Antonio Square became a focal point for political dialogue as the People’s National Party (PNP) formally introduced Isat Buchanan as its candidate for Eastern Portland. Held in the heart of Portland’s capital, the gathering attracted a crowd eager to learn more about Buchanan’s vision and agenda in the lead-up to what is expected to be a competitive race.
The Vision
The event, under the theme “We Have The Win,” highlighted Buchanan’s commitment to addressing local issues and providing a fresh perspective in Eastern Portland. During his presentation, Buchanan outlined key areas of focus, including economic development, job creation, and improved social services, particularly in healthcare and education. He also emphasized the importance of community safety and vowed to support initiatives aimed at reducing crime in the area.
Buchanan, a noted attorney and human rights advocate, aims to unseat Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) incumbent Ann-Marie Vaz, who has represented the constituency since April 16, 2019. In his speech, he expressed gratitude for the support from residents and party members, pledging to work collaboratively with communities to address their pressing needs.
“We are here to create meaningful change for every resident of Eastern Portland, to ensure that opportunities are accessible to all,” Buchanan told the crowd. “The people have waited long enough for a representative who listens and responds.”
Leader of the PNP, Mark Golding underscored the party’s vision for the constituency and encouraged residents to consider Buchanan as a representative with a dedication to integrity and public service.
As the election approaches, Eastern Portland’s race continues to draw national attention, with both candidates presenting starkly different visions for the future. While Buchanan emphasized social welfare and economic development, Vaz has maintained her focus on community resilience and sustainable growth, citing her record of infrastructure improvements and investment in local programs.
The gathering at Port Antonio Square concluded with a call for civic engagement, as Buchanan invited residents to participate in the democratic process actively.
