In a display of unity and community spirit, students from the University of Technology (UTech) and members of the Rae Town Fishing Village teamed up to carry out a successful clean-up initiative aimed at improving the local environment. The ‘Rescue & Revive’ initiative, organised by the final year UTech BaCAT student Ardrene Edwards, was held on February 16, as part of a broader effort to promote environmental sustainability and community pride.

The initiative’s Campaign Manager, Ardrene Edwards shared her motivation behind the initiative, “I have a deep passion for environmental issues, I feel like it’s not talked about enough and not enough action is happening. I wanted to do something that not only educate my peers and Jamaicans as a whole but also have some community involvement that would truly make a difference”
The initiative’s main sponsor , Carib Cement Company Limited’s social impact representatives, expressed their enthusiasm to be involved, highlighting that the plastic bottles collected will be used at their plant to generate energy.
The event saw dozens of participants working together to remove waste and beautify the beach’s shoreline. Equipped with tools such as gloves and garbage bags, to collect debris; both student volunteers and residents alike expressed their excitement about making a tangible difference in the neighborhood, with this opportunity to put passion into action. With all efforts on deck, the initiative collected over 1000 pounds of garbage from the shore.

Residents further expressed that all help is welcomed to assist with the maintenance of the area. “Wi ready any time unu ready fi come again” one resident passionately expressed.
The event also provided an opportunity for students and residents to connect, share ideas, and discuss sustainable practices for the community. It’s a step toward creating a lasting partnership between the University and local neighborhoods, with a shared goal of improving the living conditions for all.
