Language and its Role in Society

Professor Ramsay’s passion and genuine love for her subject was evident, as she took charge of the room, leading an illuminating conversation about the ever-changing nature of language and the role it plays in society. She stated that “language is a cultural code that teaches us to be a part of society”, adding that language is inextricably linked to our ability to traverse myriad pathways. Professor Ramsay also lamented about the use of some forms of technology that replace true hard work and skill in writing. Professor Ramsay believes that “human life would be inconceivable without language” and that we should “appreciate words and give attention to how they function”.

At the end of Professor Ramsay’s lecture questions and comments were taken which led to a rousing discussion on the importance of English, creative writing and how to reignite students’ interest in reading and writing. In closing, Professor Ramsay asserted that she “hopes her ruminations find support in insightful exegesis from linguists.” Professor Ramsay is Professor of Afro-Hispanic Literatures and Cultures at the University of the West Indies and is also the author of several books, including Aunt Jen.
